HMI Innovation at Huawei Canada Where Technology Meets User Needs

Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) Lab at Huawei Canada is an innovation-focused HMI team that explores and develops transformative interaction experiences through human factors research, UX design, and emerging technologies.
In this TorCHI session, we will share selected examples from our innovation work over the past several years, including tapping-based cross-device interaction, full-size virtual keyboard input for foldable PCs, and whisper interaction with AI assistants. We will also share what we have learned from these cases about how to bridge technology opportunities and user experience needs, and how to move emerging interaction concepts toward real product implementation.
The in-person event will also include hands-on device experiences across different Huawei product form factors, including foldable devices and foldable PCs. We hope to use the session as an opportunity to exchange ideas with the TorCHI community, introduce some of the open challenges we are exploring, and invite broader discussion around the future of HMI and Human-AI interaction.

Our diverse membership includes people with backgrounds in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Engineering, User Experience (UX), User Experience Research (UXR), Information Architecture (IA), Design Thinking, Usability, and Design among others. As well, our members include professionals, academics, and students. TorCHI was founded in 1990 as the local chapter of ACM's SIGHI, the Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction.
