As UX practitioners, coaching and feedback are key to improving our craft. Effective coaching is important for everyone, whether you're a design leader or not. Do you wonder how you can better coach your team? Are you satisfied with the coaching and feedback you receive? In this session, we'll talk about ways to be more specific and intentional in giving and receiving feedback, how to uncover hidden sentiments, and how to coach more effectively.

Specifically, we'll talk about:

  • Coaching & feedback: What these are and how they're different
  • How both coaching & feedback can benefit everyone and level up everyone's skills
  • How coaching and feedback can happen at any time, like in casual conversations or more formal design reviews
  • How to uncover sentiments and emotions to get to the root cause of a problem
  • Actionable approaches for coaching & feedback, like active listening, open-ended questions, be intentional with giving feedback ("consider" vs. "suggest" vs. "do") and be specific about the feedback is about (e.g. white space, alignment, design divergence)
  • Questions and comments from you about what type of coaching and feedback has worked or not worked

Hi! I'm Joyce Wong, a principal designer at TD insurance. I started out as a nano-engineer in semiconductor physics and then realized design was more my calling. Some of my coolest design projects are for e-commerce, lottery & gambling, and a social media portal for patients with diseases like ALS and Parkinson's. In my spare time, I sing and perform in a choir specializing in Renaissance music. I also moonlight as a full-time mom, and my desk is often covered with crayons and stuffed animals. I look forward to meeting you all!
