Inclusive design: Case studies from IBM design leaders

As design leaders and team members, how can we improve empathy for the lived experience for marginalized people in a scalable and repeatable way? This talk provides strategies for promoting inclusive design illustrated with case studies from the authors' experiences at IBM. As well, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their challenges and insights on helping their teams gain a better understanding of diverse populations.

Herman Colquhoun Jr and Joan Haggarty both hold design leadership positions at IBM and are based out of IBM Canada Design Studio in Markham.

Herman has over 20 years of experience across several industries. In addition to his role as Design Principal for IBM Quantum, he is also a transformation leader for IBM's Racial Equity in Design initiative. Outside of work, he has recently become an avid runner.

Joan is the Design Principal for IBM Cloud & Cognitive Software line of business. As well, she participates in IBM's initiatives for accessibility and racial equity. In her 20+ years at IBM, she has held many roles in product development and technical services consulting. In her spare time, Joan can be found gardening, hiking and snowshoeing in the north Durham region.
