Aaron Marcus discusses some essentials of culture theory and culture models applied to user-interface design and the impact of culture on metaphors, mental models, navigation, interaction, and appearance, with examples from the Web to illustrate the dimensions of culture. He also shows a summary case study of the Green Machine, a novel mobile phone application/user interface prototype, intended for use with the Smart Grid being deployed in the USA, that seeks to combine information design with persuasion design to convince home users to save energy.
