TorCHI's World Usability Day 2014 -
UX Bootcamp - Hands-On Practice of Collaborative, Interactive, & Engaging UX Techniques

Presenters / Facilitators:

Andrea Ong Pietkiewicz
Nathalie Crosbie

Workshop Description:
Come out for an evening of high-energy, hands-on, fun, interactive, UX design techniques. Nathalie and Andrea will share some of the design methods that have worked well for them in the real-world, collaborative, Agile, environments they work in. You will learn about, and collaboratively practice in small groups, a series of six quick engagement techniques including the Speedboat, Goals definition, Six-up (for connecting), Design Sketching and Iterating, handling unexpected design changes, constructive & creative design critique, and Hypothesis validation/testing. Techniques will span Discovery, Concepting, Design Sketching, Evaluation, and Testing activities of product design.

Who should attend?
For those who have just started on their UX journey or considering embarking on one, this workshop will offer you a real-life, hands-on experience of what it’s like to work in a highly collaborative UX / IxD environment.

For more experienced practitioners seeking to evolve their practice to a more collaborative style, or just have fun connecting and practicing with their peers, this will offer a perspective on some approaches that have worked for many teams.

Especially well suited to those working in teams in Agile and Lean environments, you will find the techniques equally applicable even if the environment you work in is not quite Agile yet or you are a freelance practitioner.

You will leave the workshop having engaged in collaborative design activities with your peers and with a few more tools to add to your UX toolkit.

Admission FREE. Space Limited. Registration REQUIRED.

Bios:

Andrea Ong Pietkiewicz Bio:
Andrea’s UX journey started from classical advertising and marketing, from which she evolved into the digital space. Her practice is grounded in analyzing customer and market data to develop digital design strategies and tactics that align with business goals. Although her focus is on digital experiences, Andrea’s background ensures that she is acutely aware that a holistic user experience crosses media boundaries and affects every brand touchpoint. Her goal on every project is to find that sweet spot where business goals converge with target audiences needs.

Nathalie Crosbie Bio:
Nathalie’s path to UX Design, Strategy and Leadership was born from a combination of university studies in Communication, work in the fast-paced, constantly evolving technology field, and a fascination with people and all that affects them. She has been doing UX design for over eight years, including leading the design for nearly a dozen award-winning mobile and tablet apps, and responsive website products. Nathalie’s passion is gleaning insights from user research and applying them in agile, lean environments to collaboratively design solutions to business and user problems, for the delight of both. Nathalie is a strong believer in mentorship and knowledge-sharing and has practiced this as both an individual mentor and as a co-organizer, teacher, mentor, and facilitator for the Design Exchange’s Designers In The Classroom program. When Nathalie is not wearing her UX hat, you can find her pursuing some of her other loves: photography, improv, volleyball, travel and year-round cycling.
