      <title>Where Technology Meets User Needs: HMI Innovation at Huawei Canada (24 Sep 2026)</title>

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) Lab at Huawei Canada&lt;/strong&gt; is an innovation-focused HMI team that explores and develops transformative interaction experiences through human factors research, UX design, and emerging technologies.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In this TorCHI session, we will share selected examples from our innovation work over the past several years, including &lt;strong&gt;tapping-based cross-device interaction, full-size virtual keyboard input for foldable PCs, and whisper interaction with AI assistants&lt;/strong&gt;. We will also share what we have learned from these cases about how to bridge technology opportunities and user experience needs, and how to move emerging interaction concepts toward real product implementation.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The event will also include hands-on device experiences across different Huawei product form factors, including &lt;strong&gt;foldable devices and foldable PCs&lt;/strong&gt;. We hope to use the session as an opportunity to exchange ideas with the TorCHI community, introduce some of the open challenges we are exploring, and invite broader discussion around the &lt;strong&gt;future of HMI and Human-AI interaction&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Presenter: &lt;strong&gt;Jessie Deng&lt;/strong&gt; is a scientist-turned human factors researcher and UX designer at HMI Lab, Huawei Canada. Before moving into industry, she was a professor of psychology and cognitive neuroscience, with research focused on the neural mechanisms of language processing. At Huawei Canada, Jessie has led human factors and UX research for multiple emerging device experiences, including the full-size virtual keyboard interaction for a foldable PC from early concept to product launch. Her work focuses on translating complex human behaviour, usability constraints, and interaction principles into product-level design decisions. She has authored 30+ academic publications and contributed to 20+ invention patents. Her recent work focuses on Human-AI Interaction, exploring how emerging visions of human-AI collaboration can be translated into concrete system design, interaction patterns, and future-facing AI interfaces.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
