ABSTRACT: Designing safe systems in healthcare requires an understanding not only of human factors principles as they apply to an individual process, technology or environment. Due to the complex interaction of disciplines, cultures and information, it is necessary to consider the system as a whole when designing its various components. This talk will discuss the use of human factors principles and frameworks to address risk and patient saftey within the healthcare system. A range of projects, from choosing the most appropriate mobile devices for nurses, to optimizing environments to support hand hygiene, will be discussed.

SPEAKER: Anjum Chagpar, MHSc PEng
As a founding member of UHN’s Healthcare Human Factors Group, Anjum was instrumental in designing the state of the art Usability and Simulation labs at the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, and growing the team to the largest of its kind in North America. Anjum has over ten years experience designing, building and evaluating medical devices and health information technology using usercentred methods. She holds degrees in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo and Clinical Engineering from the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto.
